Back at the main track the tractor pulls were going on. Drivers would back their tractors into the sled ... |

... then raise their hands to show they were clear of the controls. One of the sled crew would then hook the sled to the tractor secure in the knowledge that the tractor could not crush them against the sled.
The driver then choses his gear and hits the throttle. |
It takes a lot of body english to maximize that pull.
At some point the front wheels begin to come off the ground (as here), the back tires begin to spin or the engine stalls out. When all forward motion stops the flag person waves the flag and the measurement is taken. |
The self-propelled sled then lifts the sled portion and backs up to the start line to await the next competitor.

After the morning tractor pulls the Alberta Mounted Rifles prepared to demonstrate their law enforcement skills ...

... protecting the world from yellow balloons. :-)
My apologies gentlemen, this is actually a serious exercise. Riders must shoot a small target from a rapidly moving horse -- it's not as easy as they make it look. |
But now it's time to go. The last thing I see as I head for the gate is the speeder loading up for another trip down the track.
