Number 26
Most of the entries in the parade were a little older than the above John Deere.
For example there was an old Minneapolis which towered above the spectators, a majestic old Rumely Oil Pull and one of the forerunners of more recent Caterpillar tractors.
Tractors weren't the only sight to see ...
Roughriders
In the petting zoo.
And the parade wasn't the only place to be ...

Here the kids enjoy the petting zoo while mums take in the quilting and discuss ... the past?
Ray Cordell's working models and the CPR speeder rides appealed to the more hands on types.
The vendors were kept pretty busy ...
Busy Market
Meccano display
And the scale models attracted a lot of attention. Here's Gordon Frank with his Meccano display.
But that old iron keeps drawing you back ... the stationary engine display was huge.
Engines
And the quality of the engines on display was impressive. These belong to Glenn Sitler.

The variety of tractors was amazing. The Field Marshalls shown here were not the only British tractors in attendance. There was a David Brown and an Austin, too. Here's another view of the Austin.
Dallas and his Lanz
German engineering was well represented too. To the left, Dallas Arnholtz is shown at the wheel of his Lanz Bulldog. Below is a German built M.A.N. tractor.

Here's the M.A.N. in the parade.
There was even an Australian made Chamberlain Tractor and a French Renault.
Chamberlain
Mogul
The feature make, however, was IHC/Farmall. This is a large family of machinery which includes this beautifully restored Mogul ...
... this Titan of a similar vintage ...
Titan
... this somewhat newer McCormick Deering ...

Thanks to Jerry Platz for this picture of Wes Leister and his 1928 McCormick Deering tractor. Jerry calls this shot 'A Man and his Tractor - it's a Wonderful Thing.'

... and this well equiped Farmall A.

Some of the other IHC tractors there:

Farmall A
Baler
This IHC baler, seen here in the parade, is driven by another International product, a McCormick Deering model 'M' stationary engine.
Last but not least, International made trucks for a long, long time, trucks that hauled everything from coal to Coca Cola.
John Deere line-up
Green paint seemed at least as well represented as red. Some of it was original and some freshly applied.
A beautiful John Deere collection.

Weighing in for the tractor pull
John Deere was well represented in the tractor pull, too. This one is being weighed in to determine the weight class in which it will compete.
Here Wes Leister helps weigh in a Massey while other tractors wait in line. Photo by Jerry Platz.
Weighing in for the tractor pull
Massey tractors held their own in both the parade and the tractor pull.

I'd like to say that these pictures are in black and white for artistic reasons; actually I just got the setting wrong on the video recorder.
Here Dave Schafers tests his uncle Carl's 1941 model D John Deere tractor against the sled. He gets a good start ...

... and goes on to a full pull.
Others had a tougher time of it.

But the main business of the day was having fun ...
getting together ...
learning a little ...

... enjoying the past.

Above, a 1930 Model A Ford attracts admiration.

Train Station
Pictures tell only part of the story. What memories do people take away from the show? If you were there, was there a special moment, a funny incident, an activity you enjoyed? What did your kids or grandkids make of it all? Drop us a note - a paragraph or two - telling us about it. Don Andrich (thanks Don!) starts things off:

To the left you see the station, point of arrival and departure at Alberta Heritage Exposition Park.
